Artist Jean Roughan: "Favorite Places" - September 2014, Weston Gallery

The library will be exhibiting the works of Dover artist Jean Roughan in our Weston Gallery during the month of September.  Jean's primary interest is in plein air landscapes in oil, but she also enjoys still life and portraits. Her paintings are currently in private collections throughout the United States and Canada, as well as at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. Jean is a past member of various local art associations, including Seacoast Art Association, Newburyport Art Association, Ocean City Art League, MD. And is currently a member of Great Bay Art Association.  We will host an artist reception at the library on Monday, September 15th at 6:30 PM.  All are welcome.

We asked Jean to tell us a little about her work:

Artist Jean Roughan"I became serious about my painting when my husband and I retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where I studied with several well-known local artists. I began seeing the beauty of the marshes and waters of the shore, learning to 'see' with an artist's eye. I noticed glorious splashes of color in unexpected places: puddles, patches of pavement, sand and water, dark stands of trees. My vision expanded when I began painting 'en plein air' and my soul was stirred by the beauty of foggy, cold days at the shore and quiet mornings in the marshes.

Here in New England the colors are more vibrant. I love to paint near the ocean and especially enjoy adding figures to a landscape or including quaint buildings. I have learned much from local artists here in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Most of my work is of local landscapes, painted on site or in my home studio. I am currently painting places and people I have seen while travelling as well. I also do still life and portrait work. Capturing the essence of a person creates a special bond with them and with my own humanity.

My painting experiences have helped me deal with life's challenges, including surviving cancer. When someone is moved by one of my paintings, perhaps reminded of a location or a quiet day enjoying nature, I feel honored to be able to share how I see the world around me and how I feel when I am painting it."

Kids' Summer Reading 2014 - Finale and Thank You's!!

Party PicCONGRATULATIONS to all the youngsters who joined this year’s summer reading program.  We had 414 kids sign up!!!  What amazing readers you are!  Yay you! Also, all the grown ups who participated deserve a big hand for the reading aloud they did, for all the tickets they filled out, and for all they do to support Lane's Children's Room in the summer and throughout the year.

We couldn’t do such an ambitious program without the strong support and collaboration with the local schools, their staff and administration. It is an honor and joy to work with such wonderful educators.

The Hampton PTA do so much for us, both with birthday books throughout the year AND with supplying the plywood cut-out that kids and their families so enjoyed at the finale.

Warmest thanks to all our phenomenal volunteers and everyone who helped throughout our busy six weeks. They assisted at programs, helped with set up and break down, and two of our teen volunteers, Danielle and Maggie, patiently counted out hundreds of tickets and wall cut-outs. We literally could not do this without you!!

We also could NOT do these large events without the generous support of our patrons. Thank you all for your assistance and much-appreciated donations of water, in addition to your will.

Flatbread Pizza was beyond good to us and donated 25 pizzas, in addition to partnering with us on fundraising via sales of their pizza.

It is also my great privilege and pleasure to say huge thank yous to the Friends of the Lane Library.  They enabled us to hire our band for the finale, in addition to Norman Ng, the magician who kicked off our summer events, AND very generously providing the money for the 4 Kindles Fires which are our grand prizes.

The Friends work tirelessly all year round, fund-raising so that we can have new furniture, games, programs, the murals in the Children’s Room, and other additions that Party Pic 2make this library an ever-growing and vital place.  Thank you, Friends, so very, very much.

We also had an anonymous benefactor who provided a very generous check that enabled us to purchase the supplies for our family reader grand prizes. You know who you are, and YOU ROCK!

The law office of HOLMES and ELLS helped us tremendously by giving us access to their electric outlets so the bands could play—and did so with great good cheer and community spirit.  They even lent us extra electrical cord, which was way above and beyond.  Thank you, Steve and company!

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our subs: Sandy Kent, Tamara Holland, Melissa Phoenix, Chris Singleton, Sharon Svirsky, and Carol McGrath, fabulous ladies all who saved the day more than once and held the fort with grace and good cheer.

An especially big note of thanks to Miss Wendy, Miss Nicole, and Miss Liz.  They are so amazing, both individually and as a fantastic team. The Children's Room is truly blessed to have a staff of such dedicated, caring, and enthusiastic women.
