May 2000 at Lane Library

Have you seen the current collectible display of wind-up toys in the lower lobby? Do you have a collection you'd like to share by displaying it, or a portion of it, in our display case? If so, contact Beverly Vetter in Children's Services to get on the schedule. Do you suppose the popularity of Noah's Ark collectibles has anything to do with the continued rain we've lately experienced?

If you are in the library and it starts raining, fear not - we now have umbrellas to check out. One of the ideas that came out of the national conference two staff recently attended was a program to initiate and reward ideas from staff - a grassroots how to improve service without breaking the bank. We have begun that process and one of the first ideas to be approved and implemented is the idea to have umbrellas to loan. We raided our own closets for extra "brollies," Bill has barcoded them and they're ready to go. We'd love to not use them, meaning we have wonderful weather, but if it does rain, we're prepared.

Instead of raining cats and dogs, we'll be Reading Cats and Dogs this summer for the summer program. Adults will have a chance to participate by reading this summer too. Each time you check out something during July and August, (the same weeks as the Children's summer program) we'll give you a raffle ticket to fill out. There will be different prizes throughout the summer, yet to be determined, but one weekly prize will be a Reading Cats and Dogs book bag, perfect for the beach. At the beach and a little bored? Stop into the Chamber of Commerce Office and pick up a free paperback from the library. A generous customer donated thousands of paperbacks recently and after we finished boosting our collection, we still had several hundred. We called the Chamber and they were willing to be the distribution site for free books. If you have paperbacks to donate, now is the time so that we'll be able to replenish the supply at the Beach periodically. Enjoy what's left of the Spring and be sure to mark some time to kick back and relax with a good book!
