July 2001 News from the Lane Library

Have you managed to accomplish any of your summer vacation to-do's on your list? What? No list? It's not too late to make one. In the reference area we have a rack of brochures on fun places to visit - same brochures you'd get visiting the highway rest stops, without having to get on a highway and pay toll! Whale watching, animal farms, and mines are just a few of the colorful trifolds that I can see from the Reference Desk. Come on in and check out what we have. Want to venture further afield ? Check out the travel display for ideas on places to visit.

The library was the recipient of many memorial gifts made in memory of two very well loved Hampton citizens who passed away this summer. First, family and friends of Mark Richards were very generous in their donations made in his memory. Next, family and friends of M. Patricia Ansourlian have been generously giving to the library in her memory. We are most appreciative that both families could think of donations to the library in their time of grief, as those gifts will go towards enhancing the collection and the library to the benefit of all in Hampton.

The end of July saw the Lane Library saying good-bye to Joanne Straight, Head of Reference Services. Joanne had been at the Lane over 15 years, in both the Children's Room, (now named Katie's Room in honor of former trustee Catherine Anderson), and upstairs as Young Adult Librarian, Reference Librarian, and finally Head of Reference. She has moved to North Carolina and already has a similar library position in her new town. Our loss is their gain. She is already missed, not only for her expertise, but for her friendliness.
