Based on the courtship of England's longest-serving monarch, this Academy Award winning costume drama vividly re-creates a time when the young queen resolves to establish her authority over those who would rule in her stead. Emily Blunt turns in a radiant performance as Queen Victoria, and Rupert Friend stars as the young Prince Albert who steals her heart. A not-to-be-missed tale of royal romance and intrigue!

On Thursday, May 20th at 5:45 PM, and Saturday, May 22nd at 2:30 PM, we will feature the powerful film Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon as rugby player François Pienaar and Morgan Freeman as South African president Nelson Mandela. Knowing that his racially torn country would host the Rugby World Cup in 1995, Mandela encouraged the South African team to forge a unity and develop the winning skills that would serve as an inspiration to the entire country. Drawing from John Carlin's Playing the Enemy, Anthony Peckham's script takes its title, Latin for "unconquerable," from a British poem Mandela held close to his heart during the 27 years he spent in prison.

As always, admission is free, with popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Lane Library.

Movies for Spring Break!

Come join us over Spring Break for two fantastic kids’ movies!

Wednesday, April 28 at <st1:time minute="0" hour="14">2 p.m.</st1:time>, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. In this he is like the best of Michael Moore, when the famous agitator is asking questions rather than shouting someone down.”

Open to the public free of charge.

Mom's Night Out!

Calling all Moms! Join us for a free night out with your girlfriends on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m. (snacks at 5:45 p.m..) Leave the munchkins at home and enjoy some tasty snacks (Wendy's famous salsa!) and a great movie.

This is an encore showing of Sandra Bullock in "The Blind Side", the Academy Award-winning drama about homeless teenager Michael Oher and the family that took him in and helped him win a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi.

The film is rated PG-13 and is free and open to the public. The storytelling is flawless throughout, moments of great comedy and even hilarity alternating with others of rueful understanding and heart-stopping sadness, and its ending is at once surprising, uplifting and unlike anything this Pulitzer Prize winner has ever written.

The Twilight Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lane Memorial Library, and is open to all. After successfully battling an eating disorder, Eileen wrote this book to help others overcome debilitating and unrealistic dieting goals, to rise above the stereotypes she herself was pinned down by for so many years. "Yo-yo dieting, starvation and bulimia consumed my life," she laments, "until I began replacing self-hatred with self-love." "I believe that all 'diets' are a temporary state of hell. There is no such thing as a 'quick fix.'" That said, Palazzolo designed a program to last forever that has been leaving her students with feelings of self-empowerment, self-confidence and self-control. A fitness and gymnastics instructor who has run her "Free" program out of Southern NH for several years, Eileen will be on hand to answer questions from the audience, and sign copies of her book. This time around we're reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an international best-seller since it first appeared in 2008. As described in Publisher's Weekly, the book is "at once a strikingly original thriller and a vivisection of Sweden's dirty not-so-little secrets (as suggested by its original title, Men Who Hate Women). This first of a trilogy introduces a provocatively odd couple: disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist, freshly sentenced to jail for libeling a shady businessman, and the multipierced and tattooed Lisbeth Salander, a feral but vulnerable superhacker. Hired by octogenarian industrialist Henrik Vanger, who wants to find out what happened to his beloved great-niece before he dies, the duo gradually uncover a festering morass of familial corruption—at the same time, Larsson skillfully bares some of the similar horrors that have left Salander such a marked woman. Larsson died in 2004, shortly after handing in the manuscripts for what will be his legacy."

More than just a superb thriller, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is Larsson's vehicle of choice to raise awareness of financial corruption, violence against women, and questions of personal responsibility in the face of horrific crimes.

Copies of the book are still available at the Circulation Desk.

"This is It" & "The Time-Traveler's Wife" - Weston Theater

On Saturday, February 27th at 2:30 PM, the Lane Library will show Michael Jackson: This Is It in our Weston Theater. Presented in full concert sound and blu-ray picture quality, this is the edited rehearsal footage of what would have been Michael Jackson's dazzling return to the live stage. (Note that the showing scheduled for Thursday, February 25th at 6:30 PM has been CANCELED due to unexpected water damage in the downstairs area.)

On Thursday, March 4th at 6:30 PM and again on Saturday, March 6th at 3:30 PM we will show The Time-Traveler's Wife, a charming old-Hollywood film based on the best-seller by Audrey Niffenegger. Artist Clare Abshire shares a deep emotional bond with Henry De Tamble, a handsome librarian who travels involuntarily through time.
