America's Historical Newspapers are here!

"The first shock of the Earthquake on the 29th past was here much as it was in Boston, or perhaps a little stronger." And so starts the article about Hampton, New Hampshire from the Boston News-Letter, November 16, 1727. This little gem, and thousands of others from around the country, can be found in our newest database called "America's Historical Newspapers," which includes newspapers from the colonial era through 1922. With these newspapers, we found out that Goody Cole isn't just a local name. She was mentioned in a newspaper as far away as Duluth, Minnesota in 1905.

As the first draft of history, newspapers have preserved detailed records of topics, people, issues and events for hundreds of years. American newspapers in the 1800s were often published by small-town printers and reflected the interests and values of the communities they served. In the 19th century, the number of titles in the nation rose dramatically, and newspapers were transformed by an increasing emphasis on society, industry, scientific advances, investigative journalism and human-interest stories. By the early 20th century, nearly every town in the United States had its own newspaper. Now you can see scanned articles and full pages of the papers, narrow your search by time period and geography, and even search French- and German-language newspapers.

This database is invaluable to anyone doing genealogical and historical research. And for the rest of us, it's just plain fun to browse. Check it out today at our website http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us under the "databases" heading. Questions? Call 926-3368.

Cut the Carbon!

The Lane Memorial Library is pleased to offer a new service that will help educate consumers on electricity use. We are circulating a CUT the CARBON! kit, which includes a Kill a Watt Meter, instructions on its use, and a simple worksheet that allows you to calculate the energy costs associated with each device in your home. Energy efficiency advice and tips are also included. The kits were provided by NHSaves, a collaborative effort of the state’s four largest electric utilities.

Check out the kit for a three-week period, plug in your appliances one at a time to see how much energy they use, and help reduce your carbon footprint.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Day

Do you have plans for the long weekend? Lane Library is here to help! Not only can you stock up on books and movies to tide you over, but we'll be open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Day this year!
What does that mean for you? We've got a fun (FREE!) day planned:

First up is the family movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on Monday, January 18th at 10:30 AM. Inspired by the beloved children's book of the same name, this movie follows the adventures of inventor Flint Lockwood and brainy weathergirl Sam Sparks as they try and figure out why the rain in their little town has stopped and food is falling in its place. Featuring the voices of Bruce Campbell and James Caan, the film's "quirky humor, plucky characters, and solid slapstick make this family comedy a frenetically tasty time at the movies." (Reviews) We request that parents who bring small children (3rd grade and under) remain with their child for the duration of the movie.

Next up is a gaming afternoon. Join us in the Lane Room from 1:30-4:30 PM. We'll break out our new X Box 360 system. You can be a Rock Star! Or just pretend to be one for the afternoon by playing Beatles Rock Band! We also have Pure (a racing game) and Lego Batman!

Questions? Ask Kirsten: kcorbett@hampton.lib.nh.us, 926-3368, or see our blog , or our Facebook or MySpace pages.

Looking for good recommendations?

You've read everything by Stuart Woods and now you're looking for a new author like him. But you have no idea who to read next.

Sound familiar? Let us help. Check out the new links in our catalog that help you find authors similar to the ones you like. The service, called NoveList Select, works like this: look up a book you recently read and liked, and you'll get a list on the left of the screen of titles you might want to check out. You may also get a list of similar authors and a link to NoveList's "Author Read-alikes." I highly recommend the "Author Read-alikes." They're written by specialists all over the country who are really good at recommending books. Their reviews are spot-on.

So next time you're looking for a good romance but have read all we have by Debbie Macomber, search for one of her books on our catalog and get some good recommendations.

If you get stuck, call us at 926-3368. We'll be happy to help!

3 new movies in the Weston Theater

Looking to shake off the winter blahs? How about taking in some great movies at the Lane Library? Due to a generous gift from the estate of Dick Weston, we now offer movies free of charge as they were meant to be seen, in widescreen and with great sound.

First up in the new downstairs Weston Theater is the sci-fi hit District 9, showing on Saturday January 16th at 2:30 PM, and Thursday, January 21st at 6:30 PM. A surprisingly thoughtful take on the "aliens invade the Earth" theme, director Neill Blomkamp weaves his South African background into an action-packed tale of extraterrestrial refugees, apartheid, and corporate greed. (Reviews). Parents should note that the film has been rated 'R' for violence and language, and that viewer discretion is advised.

Next up is the family movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on Monday, January 18th at 10:30 AM.

Finally comes the enchanting and emotional Japanese film Departures, winner of the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 2009 Oscars. Showing on Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 PM, and Saturday, January 30th at 2:30 PM, Departures is "the gentlest, sweetest movie about death that you will ever see" (Amazon.com). Daigo Kobayashi is a young married cellist who has just lost his job and moved back to his mother's home in the country. He answers a classified ad entitled Departures thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. Sometimes comical but always deeply moving, the film follows Daigo as he grows into his new profession as gatekeeper between the living and the dead. Highly recommended! (Reviews).

"Slip and Fall Prevention" Wednesday, Dec. 2nd

With Winter fast approaching, it is important to remember that slips and falls affect more than 13 million people annually. Contrary to many people’s perceptions slips and falls can be very serious. They often result in injury or even death, and exact billions of dollars in medical costs.

Join OSHA and Applied Ergonomics specialist Steven M. Jones on Wednesday evening, December 2nd at 6:30 PM for a lecture on how to help prevent serious injuries due to slips and falls. This program shows what you can do to decrease or eliminate slip and fall hazards and create a new awareness to your surroundings. Subjects include a discussion of footing, traction, surface conditions, elevations, stairs, stability in walking and balance, footwear, and interesting, humorous facts about feet and our ability to get from one location to another.

Steven Jones holds two advanced degrees from Southern Connecticut State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has published articles on musculoskeletal injuries, and is an authorized instructor in HAZMAT, CPR/AED and First Aid, the National Traffic Safety Institute, and the Brain Trauma Foundation. He is a resident of Hampton, NH.

This lecture is free and open to the public, with time set aside after the lecture for questions from the audience. For more information, please contact Darrell Eifert at 926-3368.

"Up" and "Star Trek" in our new Weston Theater

Due to a generous bequest by the late Richard Weston, the Lane Memorial Library has been able to install a wide-screen theater and sound system in our Wheaton J. Lane Room. Featuring a 110" screen, state-of-the art blu-ray projector and surround sound, the Weston Theater is now open to the public!

Our first feature film, the wonderful Pixar film "Up", will be shown at 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 12th. Suitable for all ages, this movie follows the adventures of Carl, a retired balloon salesman who decides one day to fulfill his childhood dream of finding Paradise Falls. Joined by Russell, a boy determined to get his Wilderness Explorer "Helping the Elderly" badge, and a dim-witted (talking) golden retriever named Doug, Carl indeed does make his way to South America, with many a surprise along the way.

On November 19th, also at 6:00 PM, we will show "Star Trek", the critically acclaimed and popular 'prequel' to the original television show. Filled with eye-popping visuals, great performances by a stellar young cast, and a gripping plot line, this movie is great fun even if you are not a fan of the series.

Both films are FREE and open to the public. Be sure to come a bit early for a good seat!

Speaking of which, we would also like to thank the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library for their generous purchase this year of 60 comfortable chairs for the Lane Room and Weston Theater.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Need some time to relax, get into the Halloween mood, catch up on your Halloween movies? The Lane Memorial Library is the place for you! Not only do we have plenty of movies in our collection for you to check out, but on Saturday, October 31, we will be having a Halloween Movie Marathon in our new Weston Theater (a.k.a. the Lane Room)!

The fun starts at 9:15 A.M. and continues through until just before we close up for the day at 5:00 P.M. Light refreshments will be provided by the library, but feel free to bring snacks, a sack lunch, blankets, pillows, etc. to get the most out of your movie watching experience!
Feel free to come or go for the movies that interest you. MPAA ratings progress as the movie marathon progresses. Use your own discretion.

Here's the lineup:

9:15 A.M. Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie, rated G, 67 minutes
Pooh and the gang are back in the hilariously haunted Hundred Acre Wood. Roo’s new friend Lumpy the Heffalump is ready for his first trick-or-treat in the woods but they soon discover that Pooh has eaten all of the candy. They bravely set off to find the “gobloon” that Tigger has told them about which will grant a wish so they can save Halloween!

~10:25 A.M. Coraline, rated PG, 100 minutes
Coraline is a curious young girl who unlocks a mysterious door in her family's new home and enters into an adventure in a parallel reality. On the surface, this "Other World" eerily mimics her own life - though it is much more fantastical. While encountering different versions of her own life ultimately, Coraline must rely on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home.

~12:10 P.M. Cloverfield, rated PG-13, 90 minutes
The storyline of this heavily anticipated picture revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people.

~1:45 P.M. The Amityville Horror, rated R, 90 minutes
On November 14, 1974, police received a frantic phone call that led them to the DeFeo residence, where they discovered the family slaughtered by one of their sons who claimed that the voices made him do it. The next year, The Lutz family moved in only to last less than a month before the demons in this truly haunted house drove them out. This film is based on one of the scariest true stories ever told.

~3:20 P.M. The Lost Boys, rated R, 97 minutes
Hip, party-loving teenage vampires are terrorizing the seemingly quiet seaside community of Santa Cruz. When Michael (Jason Patric) moves to the city with his family, he falls for the head vampire’s (Kiefer Sutherland) girl (Jami Gertz) and unwittingly finds himself in a world of trouble in this vampire story with a comic twist.

Local author Michael Bisceglia, Saturday September 26th

On Saturday, September 26th at 1 PM, the Lane Memorial Library will host an author talk and book signing with local newspaperman Michael Bisceglia Jr. His book Room 600 follows the life of a 'special needs' teacher in a school classroom for middle-school students with disabilities ranging from blindness to severe retardation. Based on years of personal experience, Mike has written a warm and and wonderful novel about the trials and triumphs within a world rarely seen by the public.

Though special education is often neglected, Mike Bisceglia has written a sensitive story that deals with sensitive issues and did it with dignity, diplomacy and a healthy dose of humor. - Richard Lee, Library Director, Waukegan Public Library System.

Michael E. Bisceglia, Jr. is an educator with over 25 years of experience in the fields of teaching and administration, six of which were spent teaching students with diverse disabilities. The Harry Potter Phenomenon

Lane Memorial Library to Host Free Program:
The Harry Potter Phenomenon
August 18, 2009 – 3:00 p.m.

This event will take place at the Lane Memorial Library in Hampton, NH and will feature James Krasner of the University of New Hampshire English Department.

James Krasner is an associate professor of English at the University of New Hampshire where he teaches British literature, the Bible as literature, and secondary school English teaching. His research interests include British Victorian literature, interdisciplinary studies, aesthetics, and science and nature. He was a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006.

We all know how popular Harry Potter is, but what are the literary and cultural roots of this popularity? This talk looks both at the literary lineage of the books in 19th century fiction and the current cultural and technological forces that have brought it to the forefront of popular culture. It also offers well-informed answers to the big Potter questions: Will this make kids read more? Why do so many people like Harry Potter? Should you feel bad if you don't? Is Harry Potter really anti-Christian? Will we still be reading the books in 100 years?

This program was made possible by the University of New Hampshire Speakers Bureau which connects faculty and staff speakers with non-profit organizations to share the research and knowledge of the university with the people and communities of New Hampshire. For more information on obtaining a speaker for your organization, contact the UNH Speakers Bureau at (603) 862-4401 or on the web at www.unh.edu/speakersbureau.

"Lifting and Injury Prevention" - Lecture, August 12th

Back injuries due to improper lifting can happen in a split second and result in months if not years of pain and discomfort. Understanding how the body's natural "leverage" system of joints and muscles work to coordinate proper lifts can help to prevent these kinds of debilitating injuries.

Join OSHA and Applied Ergonomics specialist Steven M. Jones on Wednesday evening, August 12th at 6:30 PM for a lecture on the biomechanics of lifting and injury prevention. Steve has written a 20 page illustrated booklet on proper lifting and muscle care, which will be available free to all who attend.
