Film Series - Hud, November 25th

The Lane Memorial Library Film series continues with Hud, showing on Saturday, November 25th at 1 PM downstairs in the Lane Room. Produced in 1963, nominated for seven Academy Awards and winning three, Hud showcases the talents of a young Paul Newman and Patricia Neal. Based on Larry McMurtry's novel Horseman, Pass By, the film begins as a low-key Western that builds to an almost Shakespearean level of human drama. The plot focuses on the Bannon family and their housekeeper whose cattle herd has been infected by hoof-and-mouth disease. Son Hud wants to pass off the cattle to unsuspecting buyers to avoid financial ruin, but the father (played by accomplished character actor Melvyn Douglas) will not hear of it. Shot in deep shades of black and white by master cinematographer James Wong Howe, this is a multi-textured account of the devastating, inevitable consequences of one man's moral blindness.
