Hampton Academy Debating Team, 1926-27: Pictured in back of the Academy building are the following debaters, from the left: Alvin C. Emery '27, Carlisle E. Moody '27, Phyllis M. White '28 (alternate), Allan P. Skoog '27, Enid L. Wyman '27, Mildred F. Collins '27, Fred E. Allen '28 (alternate), Hollis R. Johnson '27 and Philip Palmer (alternate). The Team handled such still-controversial topics as: "Should the movies be censored?" The Academy always had a strong debating team or, later, Speech Club. Rhetoric originally was a principal course of instruction at the Academy in the early and mid-1800s. [Photo courtesy of Tuck Museum, Academy Collection] |
