The Birthplace of John Greenleaf Whittier

The Whittier birthplace, showing the bridle post and boulder. The house was built in 1688 by Thomas Whittier who came to Salisbury (Amesbury) in 1638, went thence to Newbury and came to Haverhill in 1648. John G. Whittier lived here until 1837.

The scene of the poem "Snow Bound" was written in the study at Amesbury in 1866.
